Abstract | During the past years, the Amazon Forest has followed an intense deforestation. The deforestation started to increase significantly after the construction of the Transamazônica Highway in 1972, which aimed to improve the interaction between the Amazonian Region and other Brazilian areas. However, the highway was used as an easy way to reach areas of native forest. As soon as this highway has been inaugurated, the deforestation started to spread out over the forest. The regions which faced changes from the original forest to deforested areas presented several modifications, for instance, the heating fluxes between the surface and the atmosphere, that causes changes in the local circulation, nebulosity and consequently on the precipitation patterns. These changes can be used as indicators of what can happen, in the near future, if the deforestation process continues to increase in the Amazon region. This chapter summarizes some studies about the effect of deforestation on the nebulosity and precipitation over the Amazon. |
